In a recent video, Mayim Bialik spoke candidly about the growing sense of insecurity many Jews feel living in the diaspora. She contrasted this with the experience of Jews in Israel, who, despite ongoing security challenges, live with a deep sense of serenity and purpose. As a Rebbetzin residing in the Old City of Jerusalem, I want to share my perspective on this profound difference and how our unity, rooted in the Holy Torah, sustains us in these times.
The Heart of Jerusalem: A Place of Strength
Living here, in the heart of Jerusalem, I witness daily how the Torah is not just a book or a set of laws. It is the foundation of our identity and the source of our strength. The Torah is the basis and justification for Zionism. It is through the Torah that we understand the God of Israel is calling His people home, fulfilling the promises made to our forefathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. This call is not merely political or cultural; it is deeply spiritual and eternal.
The Torah as Our Unifying Foundation
The Torah binds us together as a people. It teaches us our history, our values, and our mission. In the face of rising antisemitism worldwide and even calls for genocide, the Torah reminds us of our resilience and divine protection. It is this sacred text that holds the Jewish people together, no matter where we live.
Here in Israel, especially in Jerusalem, we feel a unique connection to our heritage and to God. Even when security concerns arise, they pale in comparison to the joy and unity we experience. This joy comes from knowing we are fulfilling a divine promise and living in the land given to us by the Creator of the Universe.
The Creator of the Universe as the First Zionist
Zionism is often seen as a modern political movement, but its roots run much deeper. The Creator of the Universe is the first Zionist. He promised the Land of Israel to our ancestors and continues to guide us back to it. Psalm 132:13 says, “For the Lord has chosen Zion; He has desired it for His dwelling place.” This verse captures the divine connection between God and Zion, a bond that no earthly challenge can break.
Our unity as a people is a reflection of this divine choice. It is a unity that transcends politics and geography. It is spiritual, anchored in faith and shared destiny.
Feeling Serenity Amidst Challenges
Living in the Old City, I see firsthand how our community faces security concerns with courage and faith. Yet, these challenges do not define us. Instead, they highlight our resilience and commitment to our shared purpose. We find strength in our unity, in our prayers, and in our daily connection to the Torah.
This serenity is not a denial of reality but a recognition of a greater truth. We are part of a story that began thousands of years ago and continues to unfold. Our unity is a shield against hatred and antisemitism. It is a source of hope for Jews everywhere.
How Non-Jewish Friends Can Support
Friends of Israel who identify as Zionists play a vital role in this journey. Practical support can take many forms:
Educate themselves and others about the history and significance of Zionism and the Jewish connection to the Land of Israel.
Advocate for Israel in their communities and governments, helping to counter misinformation and antisemitism.
Support charitable organizations that assist Israeli communities, especially those facing security challenges.
Celebrate the unity and resilience of the Jewish people by joining in prayer and communal events.
By standing with Israel, non-Jewish friends help strengthen the bonds of unity that sustain us all.
Embracing Unity Through Faith and Action
Our unity is not passive. It calls for active participation in prayer, learning, and support. The Torah teaches us that we are all responsible for one another. This shared responsibility creates a powerful network of strength and hope.
As a Rebbetzin, I encourage everyone—Jewish and non-Jewish alike—to embrace this unity. Together, we can face the challenges of our time with faith and courage. Together, we can honor the promises made to our fathers and continue building a future rooted in the Holy Land.
The Power of Community and Connection
In these times of uncertainty, the strength of our community shines brightly. We gather in prayer, share our stories, and uplift one another. This connection is vital. It reminds us that we are not alone in our struggles. We are part of a larger tapestry woven together by faith, history, and hope.
The Role of Faith in Our Journey
Faith is our guiding light. It illuminates the path ahead, even when the way seems dark. We find comfort in the teachings of the Torah, which remind us of our purpose and the promises that lie ahead. This faith is a source of resilience, allowing us to rise above challenges and embrace our destiny.
The Journey Toward Redemption
As we navigate these complex times, we hold onto the promise of redemption. The journey toward this final redemption is not just a distant hope; it is a reality we can actively participate in. Each act of kindness, every prayer, and every moment of unity brings us closer to this divine promise.
Conclusion: A Call to Action
The unity of the Jewish people, grounded in the Torah and faith in the God of Israel, is our greatest strength. Zionism is more than a political movement; it is a divine calling that connects us to our past and guides us toward our future. In these times of rising antisemitism, our shared purpose and connection to the Land of Israel bring us peace and resilience.
Let us stand together, embracing our roles in this sacred journey. Together, we can create a world filled with love, understanding, and hope. Let us be the light that shines brightly, guiding others toward the truth of our shared destiny.
