A foundational axiom of Jewish thought and biblical philosophy is Middah K’neged Middah—the principle of measure for measure. History demonstrates that when a nation constructs its laws, institutions, and foreign alliances upon the betrayal or mistreatment of the Jewish people, the spiritual and societal consequences invariably return to test that nation's own foundations.

Today, France finds its republican institutions shaken by deep polarization, recurring street unrest, and the growth of parallel societies. To understand the root of this crisis requires looking not merely at contemporary politics, but across 1,500 years of French history—and the stark moral contrast between how France treated its historic Jewish citizens and the ideological forces now challenging the Fifth Republic from within.

The Historical Ledger: Persecuting the Loyal

For over a millennium, France’s Jewish minority was subjected to royal confiscations, blood libels, and expulsions, despite demonstrating steadfast civic loyalty and intellectual contribution:

  • The Medieval Purges (1182, 1306, 1394): French monarchs—from Philip Augustus to Charles VI—repeatedly used the Jewish population as financial pawns, confiscating communal wealth, ordering mass expulsions, and burning the Talmud in Paris in 1242.

  • The Vichy Betrayal (1940–1944): The collaborationist Vichy regime enacted racial decrees (Statut des Juifs) without German coercion, deploying French police to arrest and deport ~76,000 Jews, including thousands of children interned in Paris during the Vel' d'Hiv roundup.

  • The Modern Diplomatic Shift (Post-Oct 7): Even as violent antisemitism spiked dramatically on French soil, French official leadership repeatedly vacillated on the world stage—criticizing Israel's military operations, proposing international arms embargoes against the Jewish state, and attempting to bar Israeli defense firms from European expos.

Throughout these centuries, the Jewish community never established counter-societies, never sought to subvert French civil law, and consistently upheld the Talmudic mandate of dina d'malkhuta dina ("the law of the land is the law").

The Radical Islamist Challenge: An Ideology of Division

The modern domestic crisis in France presents a glaring historical contrast.

Millions of Muslims in France live peacefully, work across every sector of the economy, and respect the laws of the Republic. However, French authorities have allowed an assertive, ideological minority—radical political Islamism—to establish deep roots in urban suburbs (les banlieues).

Unlike earlier waves of immigrants, this political movement explicitly rejects the secular, universalist framework of the French Republic:

  • Challenging Republican Law: From the classroom to the streets, radical ideologues have contested laïcité (state secularism), created territorial enclaves where municipal authority and emergency services are routinely attacked, and fostered an environment where teachers, civil servants, and citizens face physical intimidation.

  • A Shared Animus: The driving ideological engine of radical Islamism is the very same ancient hatred that historic France once cultivated: an obsessive hostility toward the Jewish people and the Jewish state. Today, French Jews—Europe’s largest Jewish community—are subjected to unprecedented security threats, forcing tens of thousands to emigrate or leave their traditional neighborhoods.

The Reckoning

Herein lies the tragic historical mirror:

  • On Israel and Gaza: Standing before the world stage at the United Nations, President Macron fiercely condemned the Jewish state's defense against terrorist violence, proclaiming:

"We've seen the destruction of civilian infrastructure, human rights violations. It's a new era of barbaric acts. The spectacle. The spectacle. It is shameful."

  • On France's Own Streets: Shortly after, faced with the unchecked reality of urban rioting and institutional chaos at home, President Macron was forced to address his own citizens with an eerily parallel lament:

"Shops were broken into, public buildings were attacked and in some instances destroyed. Hundreds of police staff were wounded."

The contrast could not be sharper:

  1. A nation whose leadership self-righteously lectured Israel on restraint while it fought an existential war against jihadist terror networks now finds its own municipal buildings torched, storefronts looted, and security forces overwhelmed by radical unrest.

  2. A state that historically oppressed, expelled, and disarmed a peaceful, loyal Jewish minority that always upheld the law of the land now stands paralyzed before aggressive counter-societies that openly mock republican authority and tear down its institutions.

Middah K’neged Middah is not an abstract concept; it is history's ledger coming due. When a civilization abandons moral clarity, appeases extremism for short-term domestic peace, and joins in the diplomatic delegitimization of the Jewish state, it invites the exact same forces of disorder to consume its own house.

As a Bible teacher, birth doula & retired nurse living in the Old City of Jerusalem, I’ve spent my life assisting in moments of profound transformation.

My own journey reflects this—from a devout Christian home with a passion for prophecy to a new life as a convert to Judaism, I’ve learned that our stories are often one, intertwined narrative.

Today, I see the world in a state of intense, purposeful labor. These are the "birth pangs" of the Final Redemption, and as a "Geula Doula," I am here to breathe with  you through this final, glorious stage of our shared history.
