The Heart of a Nation Found in the Rubble

A rare and powerful archaeological discovery beneath the southwestern corner of the Temple Mount has once again illuminated the unbreakable bond between the Jewish people and their eternal capital. The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) recently announced the discovery of a 1,300-year-old lead pendant adorned on both sides with the symbol of the seven-branched menorah—the unmistakable emblem of Jewish identity and faith Israel Today.

Unearthed during excavations in the Davidson Archaeological Park, north of the City of David, the artifact dates to the Late Byzantine period (6th–early 7th centuries CE). This was a time when imperial edicts strictly forbade Jews from residing in or even entering Jerusalem. Despite this ban, the pendant—likely worn as a personal amulet rather than mere jewelry—serves as a silent testimony that Jews never relinquished their spiritual connection to the Holy City JNS.

Only one other known lead pendant of its kind exists in the world, currently housed in a museum in Baltimore, but this is the first to be found in a controlled scientific excavation in the heart of Jerusalem Israel Hayom. Ayayu Belete, the worker who first spotted the gray object among the stones, described being "deeply moved" by the sight of the menorah Gov.il. The artifact is now being displayed to the public for the first time this Hanukkah at the Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein National Campus for the Archaeology of Israel.

ZAH Perspective:

This discovery is a physical manifestation of the Mersah—the enduring spirit of the Jewish people. While the world debates "rights" and "claims," the very soil of Jerusalem is coughing up the truth. A 1,300-year-old lead pendant doesn't just represent history; it represents defiance. It shows that even when an empire said "No," a Jew's heart said "Jerusalem," and they risked everything to be near the site of the Holy Temple.

Advocacy Angle:

Talking Points:

  • Archaeological Truth: This find provides scientific proof of a continuous Jewish presence and devotion to Jerusalem, even during periods of foreign occupation and official bans.

  • Symbolic Continuity: The seven-branched menorah has remained the primary symbol of the Jewish nation for millennia, debunking the myth that Jewish connection to the land is a modern invention.

  • Resilience: The fact that this was an "amulet" suggests a deep personal faith and an refusal to be severed from the Temple Mount, no matter the geopolitical cost.

Prayer Point:

For Thy servants take pleasure in her stones, and love her dust." (Tehillim / Psalms 102:15)

  • Pray that more hidden truths of Jewish history will be revealed from the soil of Israel to silence those who deny the Jewish connection to the land.

  • Ask Hashem to strengthen the resolve of those currently defending Jerusalem, reflecting the same courage of the anonymous Jew who wore this pendant 1,300 years ago.

  • Pray for the archaeologists and workers in the City of David, that they be protected as they uncover the foundations of our heritage.
